WINDRUSH VALLEY

AMATEUR BOXING CLUB

ABOUT THE BOXING CLUB

In 1978, Witney Boxing Club was formed under the guidance of the legendary Reg Marshman, and later Steve Setch. The club at that time trained at Newlands Sports and Social Club in Witney. For those that ever trained there, we are sure they will agree it was bordering on a mud hut/porter cabin. It did however provide an opportunity for many to taste and experience boxing.

In 2007 the floods of Witney condemned the training premises, and at that point a decision had to be made about what to do next. A new committee was formed, a new venue found and with thanks to some sponsorship and fund support from Witney Rotary Club, new equipment was purchased. The club decided to change the name to Windrush Valley Amateur Boxing Club to encompass the geographical area rather than being town specific.

We have now grown into the only boxing club affiliated to England boxing in West Oxfordshire that trains boxers to national level. All our coaches are fully qualified through the England Boxing, DBS cleared, first aid qualified and are fully current with safe guarding regulations. We were the fourth boxing club in England to gain Sport England Club Mark Accreditation, and have been honoured with the Queens Award for Voluntary Service (MBE for voluntary services).

We work hard with governing bodies and the local community (Police, Social services, local Council and Schools) to provide a stable and safe environment for all to attend, actively promoting moral values and community inclusion. We provide a regulated environment encouraging physical and mental health, fitness, and well-being for all involved. We also organise excursions to other boxing locations across the country so the team can enjoy the sport outside of normal competition.

We are also qualified to deliver the ASDAN cope qualification (equivalent to a level 2 GCSE), so even if you do not wish to box in the competitive arena, there are still opportunities for any age (10yrs +), ability or gender to get fit both mentally and physically.
